Bradycardia could then be regarded as the consequence of a vagal mechanism triggered by serotonin action on central methysergide-sensitive serotonergic receptors. Systemic administration of 25 or 37.5 mg kg⁻¹ of serotonin creatinine sulfate induced a delay in the ages of vaginal opening and first vaginal oestrus, a decrease in the number of ovulating animals, and serum concentrations of FSH, LH, oestradiol and progesterone. Not only do the intestines produce almost all of the body's serotonin supply, but serotonin is required there to promote healthy digestion. Elsewhere in the body, serotonin also helps with sleep, sexual function, bone health, and blood clotting. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine or 5-HT) is a multifunctional bioamine with important signaling roles in a range of physiological pathways.

Central serotonin (5-HT) is an anorexigenic neurotransmitter in the brain. However, accumulating evidence suggests peripheral 5-HT may affect organismal energy homeostasis. Systemic administration of serotonin at doses of 2, 4, and 8 micrograms/kg body weight/min caused a slight increase in mean arterial blood pressure (1, 4 and 11%), a large decrease in uterine blood flow (10, 37, and 71%) but did not change cardiac output. Serotonin (5-HT), a well-known neurotransmitter in the brain, also plays an important role in peripheral tissues, including the immune system. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that many different types of immune cells express the machinery to generate, store, respond to and/or transport serotonin, including T cells, macrophages, mast cells, dendritic cells and platelets.

Serotonin-producing cells in the mouse brain have been reported to play an essential role in maintaining proper body temperature, and regulating breathing . Serotonin's effects in the brain could be considered its “starring role” in the body. As it helps regulate your mood, serotonin is often called the body's natural "feel-good" chemical.
Intravenous administration of serotonin (30 micrograms.kg-1) caused a marked bradycardia (45%) and a simultaneous decrease in cardiac output (50%), ventral (35%) and dorsal (50%) aortic blood pressures. Branchial resistance was markedly increased (60%) and systemic resistance decreased (30%). Cardiac stroke volume remained unchanged.

Too little is linked to depression, but too much serotonin is linked to a long list of side effects, may contribute to anxiety and autism, and can even be acutely dangerous. Antidepressants usually work by increasing serotonin levels, but can elevate them too much.
