Gert Biesta is Professor of Public Education at Maynooth University, Ireland, and Professorial Fellow in Educational Theory and Pedagogy at the University of Edinburgh, UK. He writes about educational theory and policy, including Obstinate Education: Reconnecting School and Society (Brill | Sense, 2019). A bstract In this essay, Gert Biesta provides a critical analysis of the idea of evidence‐based practice and the ways in which it has been promoted and implemented in the field of education, focusing on the tension between scientific and democratic control over educational practice and research. In the seven chapters in this book Gert Biesta explores in detail what an existential orientation to education entails and why this should be an urgent concern for education today. He highlights the importance of teaching, not understood as the transmission of knowledge and skills but as an act of (re)directing the attention of students to the Gert Biesta is Professor of Educational Theory and Pedagogy (part-time) and Deputy Head of the Institute of Education, Teaching and Leadership. He joined the Moray House School of Education and Sport in August 2019.
